concerning testing with 2 PCs the answer is yes you can. Using Win7 is easiest. Launch Homegroup under control panel. Share libraries and printers. Click stream ... and click on media streaming options. Before saving validate all settings to enable file sharing. (This sets up share permissions in windows land) You may also have to set up directories as shares. I use the Public folders groups under users for sharing media. Also, I found that videos is where you find/put mp4, mkv, mpg, avi files. Now run Media Media Center. copy the mp4,mkv... file into the public videos directories. On second pc join the homegroup and add network connection to the first pc directories. and run media player or VLC to play files on other pc. (sorta like playing files on remote pc using shared directories) when you have DLNA certified devices the windows media center pc will be available.

Also there are several other home media server applications which are easier to setup than Windows. Nero MediaHome is one,
