Among several other improvements, the new version 4.8.6 improves the file scanning. To begin with, it's now significantly faster. It should also make less errors when recognizing the files. Our file scanning feature was already quite popular because it worked pretty decently, even though sometimes it made a few mistakes, hence the necessity to check the automatic associations before adding the files to your database. This new version makes even less mistakes (like 10 times less) and forgives even more typos. Nonetheless it's still recommended to check the scanning results... When two movies have the same title, you can associate the right one by adding the year to the file name. In some cases, adding the leading article can help too, because the scanning can distinguish between "The Hours" and "Hours". The only remaining errors should occur when the AKA of a movie or the movie itself is missing from our database. In this case, please use our forum to request the addition of the missing movie or the missing aka, thank you for your contribution!

Hecor,

when i look @ the time i need to scan 3500 movies and compare this
to adding those by hand :-)

In my opinion, scanning has been fast from the beginning (for me 2010).
This was the main reason for me to stick with Coollector !

It's nice you developed the program to what is has become....

Thank you, Skinamp!

When looking at my code, I've been very surprised to discover that I had completely forgotten to optimize how the program checks if a file is already associated or not. With several thousands of files, you should clearly see a difference.

Since i use the nas to store most of my movies, everything is faster. So I'm affraid I'm not the one to ask :-)

For me is waiting 30 or 40 seconds not important.

The only Thing i notice is that there are scanning differences between the 6 folders on nas. Maybe the folder structure play a role in that? All folders contain a eqaul amount of movies.

Probably not much.

It's surprising. If all the movies are already associated, scanning the folder should be very fast (now with the new version) and you shouldn't be able to see a difference.

That's correct, scanning folders already associated are lightning fast.
The difference was when scanning to create a new database.
While there are other folders in the structure, that i don't wanna scan,
i scan the 6 folders one by one. That's where i noticed the differences.

Now that i'm using the options you've mentioned "find associations with missing files"
this is no longer necessary, this goes lightning fast. Whats the point of making
something that's extremely fast, faster ?

It used to be noticeably slower. That's the part I have improved.

When you add only a few new files to the folder, you expect the other files to be skipped almost instantly.

Some movies take longer to identify than others. I'd say the difference is random.

It's not acceptable that the scanning speed goes down when you add more files.

Also, I'm a little bit obsessed with optimizations :ok:

Do you create a new database often? Is it because of a particular problem?

Maybe you remember....

i used to create a new database every time, didn't quite
understand  the option you showed me "check file assosiations".
Now i use it and do not have to create new databases anymore !

Ok, now I understand!

When I'll rewrite the help file, I'll emphasize the best practices to manage your video files ;)
