Hi Hector,

may i ask why you have to add requested movies by yourself.
Cant you automatically add ALL "old and future movies" known by IMDB ?

Just interested ;-)

It would be immoral/illegal to create my movie database by simply ripping the IMDb website. Since the beginning, I've decided to maintain my own database to avoid troubles in the future. That's a huge amount of work, but it's worth it as it guarantees the perennity of Coollector.

While building my own database, the IMDb is only one of the many sources of information that I use. In fact, I try to use the IMDb at little as possible to make sure I avoid troubles, though I admit that with some obscure movies it's often the only source.

Nonetheless, because we provide a link to the IMDb pages, Coollector is closely tied to the IMDb. I can only add movies that are in the IMDb, and I use the year from the IMDb to avoid confusion even when other sources report a different year.

I certainly don't want to do that. The IMDb has tons of movies that I'm glad I don't have to add to Coollector because nobody miss them. I add only the most significant movies by tracking what's released in theater, on TV, on DVD, on Netflix, on Amazon, on Hulu, etc...

If there's a movie I didn't add on my own and a user is missing it, the user can request its addition. But I add most of the movies before anyone request them, and it's very common that someone requests a movie that I was about to add anyway.

Very admirable, Hector. You're right, there's so much clutter on IMDb. Not that that's bad, I'm sure there are people who appreciate obscure films. But I prefer this more curated approach.

https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/general-information/content-licensing/GZGA5HDQ8NE97LVR?ref_=helpart_nav_52#

IMDb's database is IMDb's database. It's possible to license a subset of their database for a very hefty price. It's not even possible to license the whole database.

Maintaining my own database is a lot of work but it ensures the perennity of the app. I won't risk the adventure of Coollector to end with a Cease and Desist letter.
