Translation to other languages?

Tue Jan 29, 2008 6:15 pm

Hello and congratulations for this application.

Have you considered translating/allowing to translate Coollector to other languages? I am especially interested at Spanish

I am just trying Coollector and have found that some Spanish movies in the database have their original titles in Spanish, but others in English. Which standard will follow the application in the future? (Could I suggest keeping the original title?)

'Ñ' and written accents seem lost in the database (ie, "Luis Bunuel" for "Luis Buñuel" and "Jesus Fernandez" for "Jesús Fernández"). Could it be fixed?

Thank you and excuse my English level.

Yes, it's planned. I hope to start translations this summer. The languages I'm comfortable with are SPANISH, French, Italian, Portuguese/Brazilian, and German. For other languages, I'll have to find help.

When a movie doesn't have any english title, Coollector shows the original title. But whenever it's possible, it's the english title that is shown (because it's the english encyclopedia).

Those are mistakes, thank you for reporting them. I'll fix them with the next update. Please report other mistakes you may find.

Here are some more details on how the program will go multilingual:

* at any time you'll be able to change your language settings. The program menus will change accordingly, as well as the encyclopedia to which it's plugged.

* there will be a spanish encyclopedia, a french encyclopedia, etc...

* all the encyclopedias will have the same movies, except that if you use the spanish encyclopedia, titles will be in Spanish as much as possible, description will be in spanish, professions, genres, etc... In case no spanish description was found, the english description will be shown, until a spanish description is found.

* your personal data can be superimposed on any encyclopedia. You can start with the english encyclopedia, then move to the spanish encyclopedia, etc... As much as you want. It's transparent, you have nothing to do.

* there will be price localities.

For instance, if you use the program in English, you'll have the choice between 4 localities:
1) USA (US dollar currency)
2) Canada (canadian dollar currency)
3) Australia (australian dollar currency)
4) UK (pound currency)

If you use the program in Spanish, there will be:
1) Spain locality (euro currency)
2) ???

When I was young, I loved to learn new languages (including programming languages).

I've also started learning japanese, russian, arabic, dutch, catalan, romanian...

And I studied Latin at school, for 5 years

Thank you for proposing your help, but we'll do it on our own.

In fact, translating the database isn't really a translation work...

The english database has titles like this:
English Title [English Aka] <Original Title>

Well, the spanish database will simply have titles like this:
Spanish Title [Spanish Aka] <Original Title>

Of course, the english descriptions should be replaced by spanish descriptions. But we'll make the spanish database available as soon as we're done with the titles. That means that, at first, the spanish database will have english descriptions, that we'll progressively replace by spanish descriptions. We'll allow the users to contribute spanish descriptions, and that's where your help will be welcome.

With this solution, we should be able to quickly provide the database in many languages. As I've described, it won't be perfect at first, but having the titles in your own language should be a great start.
