Post subject:  BETA 10 => v3.21.5

The tenth beta is included with the version 3.21.5.

To start your experiments, click the menu "Tools->Skin Editor".

What's fixed with this beta:

- Fixed a lot of bugs.

What remains to be done:

- Implement the remaining background and border settings.

- Implement the size settings.

- redo the media icons (DVD, BLU-RAY, etc...)

- new skin info => author & credits

- fix everything that doesn't work as it should...

- new grid style with less text

- new grid style with no text at all

- filters & string search => highlight text using bold font, instead of outlining

- skin folders => deletion and management

- discovery and download of new skins, with a search by skin release date, author, or popularity

I was playing around with the skin system when i noticed that i can't see the grid behind a transparent grid cell. about how long is it until that is implemented?

Also will partial transparency be supported?

You've finally solved your Windows problems ?

I will release a new beta later today, but cell transparency is already implemented in version 3.21.5. You must be doing something wrong. For example, maybe you're applying transparency to Cell1 (picture in the middle) when your grid has a Cell2 style (picture on the side) ?

Technically, partial transparency isn't a problem for me. I use it in several places, like when the mouse is over a cell. But I hadn't planned to apply it somewhere else. Do you have in mind a design that requires that setting ?

Sorry, I spoke too fast. What I've done with the cells below the mouse, is just drawing a color with an alpha value. What you ask for is more tricky, and I'm not convinced that it's worth the effort because, personally, I've never liked semi-transparent windows, as I find them messy. I much prefer a well defined background rather than a mix of two backgrounds.

Yup, quite some time ago. Have been looking at the skin system every now and again checking whats up.

If put together properly you wont be able to tell. Foreground melds seamlessly with background and yet it still seems as if there's only a single background while still remaining scalable and resizable.

By the way please don't think that's an actual skin.
It's just a mixture of random pngs from the project I'm currently working on.

About you screenshot => that's not cell transparency as I intended it.

If you set the cell background to "transparent", then it's the grid background below that can be seen. In your case, the cell background isn't transparent, it's a png (with some transparency, but the grid doesn't know it, and because the cell is defined as not transparent, the grid doesn't draw its background at all).

I hadn't thought about the case you've tried, and I don't know if it's important to worry about that kind of case. In my opinion, when you'll do a real skin, I doubt that you'll do this kind of thing.

I was actually checking if i could use a grid cell with a non-rectangular background.
eg. rounded corners, frilly borders, organic etc.

I searched Google for a picture of a garden and a flower-frame to help bring across what I'm trying to say. (Credit to whom credit belongs 8) )

This has:
- jpg panel background
- partially transparent grid background
- grid cell background with transparency
- and semi-transparent purple tint over selected cell

This is just a 5 min mockup but I hope it will help to explain how these features could prove useful. Hope you will think about it. :)

This is already possible with the current skin system.

kakashi wrote:

I notice that it's just a tint, not a complex background that would mix with the other background.

Thanks for the mockup. I will think about it, but for the moment it's a bit too abstract.

The current skin system already offers an infinity of possibilities. Maybe I'll add even more possibilities. But for that, I'll wait to be presented with an actual skin that would really benefit from a new feature.

So make a skin like that then?

You wouldn't seriously make a skin like that. It'd be awful. Personally, I wouldn't use it.

Start by thinking about a skin that would really be great and usable. And if you stumble on a technical limitation, then you come back to me ;)

Also, as an artist, you probably know that it's often more stimulating to work with some constraints

Of course i didn't mean exactly like that, i dont particularly like flowers. Hate them on my PC :( .

Anyways I was just messing with you, I can't as yet . I try to always use original images so making a proper skin would take a lot of work. I don't have enough time right now. I was only able to be online for the time it took me to get a new website up and running :( . Gotta get back to work now. Hopefully soon though 8) .
