Mac download loop

Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:39 am

I'm on a Mac with version 4.17.2, but can't install the latest update. I have downloaded it several times, tried the installation process each time, and things seem to go okay, but find it hasn't been installed. Could it be because you've given it a date of November 2021, which hasn't occurred yet? Or perhaps I have a computer problem, since nobody else has reported having this issue.

Thanks for pointing that mistake, I will fix it, but it's just a typo in the release notes, with no consequence at all.

Are you using the Mac App Store version or the version from our website?

Make sure that you have one and only one instance of the app on your Mac, otherwise the update could update the wrong app, possibly creating a loop.

It's a Mac issue I've never been able to solve. One instance of the app launches the update, but it's another instance which is updated. Weird, and if there's a way to control it, I've never found it.

I have only one instance running. My Coollector license code arrived on 12/29/14, but I can't remember if I got it from the app store or your website. Perhaps it's time to delete and reinstall it. Are there any plist or preference files I could try deleting first? Any files that might have become corrupted? I think I'll wait until the next database update and see if that one will install correctly. I just hope I'm not having computer problems.

If you have a license, then it's not from the Mac App Store, thanks for the info.

I didn't mean instances running. Only one instance can run at a time.

What I meant is actual "Coollector Movie Database.app" files.

I'd want you to search for the word "coollector" on your Mac to see if you can find several of those.

If there are several, keep only one. Have a look into your trash can too and empty it if needed.

I have only one Coollector app in my applications folder. I just tried "show contents" and found the database, then tried to move it to a different location temporarily, to see if I could install a new one from scratch, but Coollector won't launch if the database has been removed, so I had to put it back.

Each time I download the update and use the Mac installer, the update seems to install properly, so I wonder where on my computer the file is being installed. (I've selected to install on the proper drive, not some auxiliary drive.) Where is the downloaded file stored before it is installed? It doesn't appear in the app package folder. I'm wondering if something in my Library has become corrupted. Which files would you suggest I delete?

If the next update doesn't work, I'll just reinstall Coollector. I use it every day, no exaggeration. I wouldn't even mind paying for it again.

I read the install.log file and found these two lines in succession:

PackageKit: Executing script "./postflight" in /private/tmp/PKInstallSandbox.lgHnsh/Scripts/com.Coollector.coollectorMovieDatabaseUpdate.postflight.pkg.C8Wapb

./postflight: LSGetApplicationForInfo() failed with error -10814 while trying to determine the application with bundle identifier com.Coollector.CoollectorMovieDatabase.

"failed with error -10814" is what stands out.

I'm very glad you like the app so much :D

The applications folder isn't enough, you need to search your whole computer, including your trash folder, your download folder, etc...

Drift wrote:Each time I download the update and use the Mac installer

I suggest we give up with the update method and we install the app instead. Next time you'll tell me if the update method keeps not working.

Simply download the latest version of the app:

http://www.coollector.com/Coollector_Movie_Database.zip

and put it inside your applications folder, replacing the old one. That's all you have to do.

Thanks very much. I think the problem is due to Mac OS, not Coollector.

We'll keep an eye on that issue. If there's a way I can fix it, I'll do it.

I used the terminal app to repair permissions, which may be why the latest update installed properly. (Why on earth did High Sierra remove "repair permissions" from disc utility?) I never thought it was a problem with Coollector, since I was the only person having the problem. Thank you for taking such good care of Coollector users!

Thank you very much for your feedback, very glad that your problem is solved :D

In the past there has been update issues that were my fault, but hopefully everything is fine now.
