tt0060679 Man of the Soil<Matira Manisha > (1966)
Working outside Bengal for the first time, Sen sets the film in Orissa. The film contrasts traditional and modern values as exemplified by divergent attitudes of two brothers to their inherited land. Such divergence in attitudes is intensified during war years when native exploiters and controllers of agrarian economy appear on the scene. Interestingly, no conclusion is drawn and no judgment is offered in the film. The spectator is asked to watch and, in the process, to get involved, to question.

tt0067252 Interview (1971)
A dawn to dusk account of a young man in search of a job. This is his day of an interview in a swell Indo-British firm where, logically, he has to look his best. His only suit, a complete one, is in the laundry, and as luck would have it, all city laundries are on strike from that morning. The film is an intense search for a new suit to be borrowed from any of his friends, the loss of a good one procured that way, again a frantic search, and finally the interview—all erratic blending of fictional narrative, news reel coverage and near-cinema-verite type documentation. The film ends with a strange interview between the dejected young man and an unseen spectator who has watched him since the film started. And at last the film arrives at a moment of judgment -- that of the value-world.

tt0070498 Padatik (The Guerilla Fighter) (1973)
A political activist escapes the prison van and is sheltered in a posh apartment owned by a sensitive young woman. Both are rebels: the activist against political treachery and the other on social level. Both are bitter about badly organized state of things. Being in solitary confinement, the fugitive engages himself in self-criticism and, in the process, questions the leadership. Questions are not allowed, obeying that is mandatory. Displeasure leads to bitterness, bitterness to total rift. The struggle has to continue, both for the political activist, now segregated, and the woman in exile.

tt1584101The Representative<Pratinidhi> (1964)
A young engineer marries a young widow with a child by her previous husband. In a society where taboos play a dominant role, the marital life, despite the best intentions, grows increasingly difficult and finally collapses.

tt0066880 Calcutta 71 (1971)
A young man, eternally 20, walks through history, through poverty, squalor and death. Eternally 20 and killed so many times -- killed because he has been protesting and has remained an agent-provocateur. He comes and goes, between stories, each story having an independent set-up and new characters, but all stories harping on the eternal reality: Poverty and Degradation. While the physical look of poverty and hunger remains unchanged, it is the mind and attitude that keeps on changing. At the end, the young man of 20 appears on the screen again, just killed, and “incites” the spectators to react.

tt0328810 Aamaar Bhuvan (2002)
Set around a Muslim community in a small village in West Bengal, Mrinal Sen’s last film Amar Bhuvan (2002) is a comeback vehicle for the veteran director after a long hiatus. Deeply disturbed by the increasing violence in our society, Mrinal Sen had focused his lens on a theme of love this time around.
The film revolved around a triangle viz Meher (Kaushik Sen), Noor (Saswato Chaterjee) & Sakina (Nandita Das). Noor marries Sakina, but soon separates from her. He leaves for the Gulf and returns with a lot of money and a wife after a few years. Meanwhile, Sakina had married Meher and they have three children. Meher somehow manages to eke out a livelihood through farming and other menial jobs. Noor and Meher are cousins, and Noor employs Meher on contract jobs because of his skill and efficiency. Meher also earns some money in the process.

tt0085785 Khandhar (1984)
Three friends take a couple of days off and run away from the mad hurry of city life to enjoy themselves in the silence of the ruins, which once was a huge mansion of a feudal estate. In the midst of desolation lives a family of two, a mother and her daughter, heirs to a portion of the derelict mansion. The mother is sick, paralysed, and blind, surviving on a hope that a distant nephew of hers will one day come and, as promised, marry the daughter. But the fact is otherwise: the young man is now with his wife and a child living, perhaps, a settled life in the city. The daughter knows the truth but keeps it to herself. Two days and a half are enough to build a cruel story when, having been thrown into a peculiar situation, the visitors and the daughter are forced to go through a nerve breaking exercise, acting a dreadful play and giving an impression to the ailing and blind mother that the photographer among the visitors is the one who once promised to come and marry the daughter.
After two days and a half, the three friends prepare to leave the ruins and go back to the city. Just before they leave, the photographer and the girl have a short meeting which excites a brief dialog and a mute understanding. Soon after the photographer is back at his post in his studio and the girl is left to terrifying loneliness and to her mother who now will know the whole truth. And life goes on ...

tt0088231 Tasveer Apni Apni (1984)
The protagonist pops out of an author’s novel accusing him of creating a tragic fate for his own character. However, these fictitious characters step into the real climax of the main film which does not spell logic as they just do not exist. So, does this imply that the film can be read as the imagination of the protagonist running wild where nothing is real at all?

tt0080341 Akaler Shandhaney (In Search of a Famine) (1981)
7 September, 1980. A film crew comes to a village to make a film about a famine, which killed five million Bengalees in 1943. It was a man made famine, a side- product of the war, and the film crew will create the tragedy of those millions who died of starvation. The film documents the convivial life among the film crew and the hazards, problems and tension of film making on location. The actors live a double life, and the villagers, both simple and not-so-simple folk watch their work with wonder and suspicion. But as the film progresses, the recreated past begins to confront the present. The uneasy coexistence of 1943 and 1980 reveals bizarre connection, involving a village woman whose visions add a further dimension of time—that of future. A disturbing situation, indeed, for the “famine-seekers”!

tt0084198 The Case Is Closed (1982)

Torn between a sense of guilt and fear of a police case and consequently scandal, the young employer and his wife expose their petty, hypocritical selves. Fearing accusation from the father of the deceased, they make futile attempts to please him. That nothing happens to them and the father departs quietly, leaves them completely defeated and crushed.

tt0074926 Mrigaya (The Royal Hunt) (1977)
Nothing is common between the two men to ever meet and understand each other; neither the origin of the British administration of imperial time nor the primitive culture of the tribal from the jungle in central India. Nothing is common but the sharing of a common passion: hunting.
To both of them a big game is a game, a prey a prey; this is probably why Ghinua, the young hunter and a loving husband, reacts like a terrible “hunter” when the usurer-landlord steals his wife. He slays him as the wild pigs have to be slain when they destroy harvest, or a tiger when he lifts a child. An avenged man, he brings his trophy, the head of the most mischievous game in his area, to the only man who will understand him, the English sahib, the other hunter.
Neither Ghinua nor his village will ever understand why the Imperial justice takes his life when a big award is given to the traitor who has killed Shalpu – one who was for them all a revolutionary hero.

tt0082154 Chalchitra (The Kaleidoscope) (1981)
A young ebullient and sensitive Calcuttan meets the editor of a leading newspaper and is assigned to 'do' a newsy yet intimate story of his own middle class milieu within two days. The young man, endowed with erratic enthusiasm, sets every bit of situation he comes across to critical analysis, but fails to build a wholesome reportage. Utterly desperate, he even acts as catalyst but with no tangible effect. In a confused state of mind he dreams an absurd dream full of fury and a deep annoyance at the bourgeoisie. What follows is a second meeting with the editor and an inevitable compromise.

tt0071317 Chorus (1975)
It begins like a fairy tale. It starts with a ritual. A bard appears on the screen and sings.Glory be the new gods who have descended to the Earth!
The chairman of the gods, concerned over the problem of want, arranges for a hundred jobs. But thousands queue for them. Too many people, too many faces, too many problems! The crowd gets disillusioned and popular discontent is mobilized as word spreads that this is just another hoax. The Chorus as well as performing the traditional role of the storyteller provides the political message, juxtaposing stylization and caricature with neo-realist and documentary sequences and direct address to the camera.
