Since uploading latest update (4 October 2017), when I scan my drive to update, it freezes after a minute or so of scanning (about 500 files) and becomes non-responsive and I have to abort the program.

Never had this issue before.

Hoping it's just a minor issue/bug with your latest update.

p.s. wonderful database, such a useful and wonderful tool.

Sorry, I've made a couple of changes, it's possible I've introduced a bug.

We need to find what file name the program stumbles upon.

Please tell me what's the last displayed file name when the scanning freezes. Also go to your disk and tell me the name of the folder it's in, as well as the name of the file after it (alphabetically).

Thanks for responding so quickly as usual!

OK, the file name where the program freezes is:
Trolls.2016
Folder name is 2016 Movies
The file name immediately after Trolls in this folder location is Una.2016.

Hope that may help find out what's going on!

Cheers

I've created a folder named "2016 Movies" and inside of it I've added the 2 files Trolls.2016.avi and Una.2016.avi, but the program didn't freeze when I've scanned that folder.

What happens if you scan only the folder "2016 Movies"?

P.S: I've noticed that Una.2016 isn't correctly recognized. I will modify the algorithm to fix that.

I took those two files out, then scanned only the single folder and it worked perfectly fine. Then I added back in those two files, and again it froze as soon as it gets toTrolls.

Then I scanned on other sub-folders and it freezes again, where possibly there is an unrecognised file name. If I scan an old folder where all files are previously associated and no new files have been added to that folder, it completes the scan perfectly.

Hope that makes sense - it seems to get stuck on a new file name that was not previously either associated or been marked as unrecognised during previous scans.

Argggh!!

Could you try with only one file to determine which one is the real culprit.

There seems to be problems with several files. What new problematic file names can you discover like that.

I don't understand why it doesn't freeze for me. Do you have a Mac or a PC?

I'm on a PC.

OK, perhaps it's me not the program! I tried something else to get around the stumble - I renamed the Trolls file, and renamed the Una file slightly, then did a scan and it completed through the whole folder. So, maybe something in the way i'd named one of those files was enough to give it conniptions since the program update (it hadn't stumbled on the names prior to the update though, so go figure?!!)

Anyway, I will see how it goes now and will advise if it hiccups again.

Thanks again for being so responsive to issues reported!!

I didn't say that. Of course it's the program's fault.

On the contrary, we must use this opportunity to understand the problem.

Could you determine if the problem was caused by Trolls or by Una?

You said other folders had problems... Which file names are involved?

Here is the previous version 4.9.9.1:

http://www.coollector.com/Coollector.4.9.9.1.exe

Please try it to see if it stumbles on the same folders.

Nah, I scanned another hard drive where I have collections and it stalls again after a few seconds.
Shall await to see if other users report issues - if they don't, then it must be something at my end going wrong. I'll delete temp files and reports and perhaps try an uninstall and reinstall.

Cheers

It stumbles on other file names. What are those file names? The more examples you give me, the more I can understand the nature of the problem.

You are my best opportunity to fix this bug.

You're not the problem, you're the solution.

I think I have the explanation. I will give you a fix to test in a moment.

Here is the fixed version:

http://www.coollector.com/Coollector.exe

Please try it to confirm that no freezing occurs anymore.

I need to release a new version quickly to fix this serious bug.

You are a champion!!!

I gave the fix a test run a few times and not a single hiccup!

I think you have solved it. Phew, i'm delighted. Thank you!!!

oh, just checking - when I ran that test - it comes up not associated with my coollector file (ie it reads as 'you don't own any movies blah blah). That's just because it's a test - yes??!

Gosh I am so so very happy you've resolved this really quickly. It's been driving me insane. Why would it stall at 'Charlie Chaplin - City of Lights 1931' and then work perfectly fine when I renamed the file 'Charlie Chaplin 1931'. It makes no sense to me at all, but i'm glad you got to the bottom of the glitch!
