My previous post contains my more critical and harsh comments. I absolutely LOVE coollector. I think the buttons would make it sooo much easier to navigate a large coollection 8) .

A simple idea has just occurred to me!

why not simply assign 2 buttons (eg. PgUp, PgDn or on screen buttons) that will skip through intervals through the lists? eg.

A, B, C, D, ...

100, 95, 90, 85, ...

10.0, 9.5, 9.0, 8.5, ...

Tapping or holding a key would cycle through preset points in any list. (like skipping a DVD instead of Fast-Forwarding)

- We would be able move freely around the list, looking at movies etc. at will.
- Not much scolling necessary.
- Not too much coding (I think)

Yes, it's true. You probably should make a backup before formatting.

The pictures are stored inside "C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Coollector\Images".

Oke,..
That should do it !
thnx

It´s different

The pictures are stored under "C:\Users\All Users\Documents\Coollector\Images", the
folder you mentioned is empty :-)

Wen i use the Windows search option to find Coollector files, then there are a lot of them
all over the system disk, not making it easy to decide wich files i should backup.

By now i know the importand files but : Why not store ALL data related to the program in
one single sub-folder of the installation folder ? This would make it easy to schedule
automatic backups !

i just don't think this idea is up to the usual standards :(

It's true that my first draft was a little rough. But after that, I gave it some more thought, up to the point where it seemed good enough. That's why I changed my mind and said that I would finally add this feature to my todo list.

Here are some more details that I hadn't told:

* the letter buttons would of course be shown only when the list is ordered alphabetically.

* there would be a delay to allow typing more than the first letter. Let's say you click the letter "A". The letter would turn glowing red, then the color would slowly fade out, taking 2 seconds to fade out completely. During those 2 seconds, you would have to possibility to click another letter.

* the letter buttons don't need to have that ugly rectangular border that I've drawn in my initial sketch.

In my opinion, only skipping to a letter is really useful, as it avoids to move out to the string search.

For the rest, it should be enough to grab the scollbar thumb and to move around the list.

Sorry, my mistake.

For many reasons...

The usual location to install the program is "Program Files", but it's a folder that requires admin rights. If you don't have admin rights, you won't be able to modify your coollection file. That's why your coollection file is inside "My Documents", allowing each user to have his own coollection. The same way, you'd need admin right to save the pictures on your hard drive. But instead of saving them inside "My Documents", we save them inside the "Shared Documents" folder, which is a folder that all the users can have access to. This way, when a user downloads some pictures, they are available to all the users, and they are not duplicated on your hard disk.

Etc...

The only really important backup is "MyCoollection.cool".

Well, if you plan to format your disk, then you can also make a backup of the pictures.

That's how the portable version works. Maybe you should move to it.

Oke,.

thnx for explaning!

Reading from portable devices like USB-Stick is slow
so the best way for using the program from portable
device is probably the much faster SSD am i right ?
Otherwise i will have my scrolling problems back i think :(

Typical usage of the portable version is on a USB stick that you move around with you. But installing on a USB key isn't mandatory.

You can also install anywhere you want on your hard drive, if all that you want is to have everything in a single folder. Simply choose a location where you're sure you'll have write permission (as I said, you could have problems with the "Program Files" folder).

I haven't really noticed a difference in speed when using Coollector portable on my external.

Typical usb 2 speed on an external hdd is usually about 20 Mb/s up (just a bit less for USB-Sticks)
Coollector's Images are only a few Kilobytes.

My hundreds of movie covers/posters (including the large images) could load all at once in just 3 seconds. usually you only load a few at a time anyway

I don't see how a faster drive would help. Coollector just doesn't seem to require much resources.

When a constructor says that his USB key has a speed of 20 Mb/s, it's the speed when transferring big files. The transfer of a lot of small files is much much slower.

You can make the test with this program (be prepared to be disappointed by your USB key):

You're right it is much slower. I don't usually transfer small files.

The fact however still remains, coollector portable works fine when I use It. I've never before had to wait for images to load from my hdd.

As you say, you're using an external hard drive. Using the portable version with an USB key is noticeably slower, especially with a cheap USB key.
