This is in response to the thread Kakashi started: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=574

I decided to start a new thread because the original one morphed into something completely different.

At any rate, this idea of being able to jump directly to an owned movie within the context of the Owned movie filter has occurred to me as well. I think this "need" arises when you have a lot of owned movies in your Coollection and you are taking advantage of the Play movie from HDD feature of Coollector.

After reading (cool) Hector's explanation of why there is no string search within a filtered list and also his reasons for not wanting to use a key combo I started thinking about a way to use what we have to acheive a similar result.

So if you've read this far and you'd like to be able to jump to a specific starting point in your long list of Owned movies, then stay with me because there is a solution of sorts.

Within the filters you can of course filter on "Owned". You can also sub filter this list using genre, country, rating, year, and media. You can also use "more filters".

Now when adding a title to your Owned Videos, let us say Mad Max, if you were to edit the base info and add the letter "M" as a detail in the [-] Detail(s) [+] fields then you could subsequently subfilter your Owned movies using the More Filters button by using Detail subfilter and the letter "M". This will result in a list of Owned movies beginning with the letter M as long as you included that value in Details.

I'll admit it's a bit more setup when adding an Owned movie and it is not quite a keyboard shortcut but it does work to show you just the movies that start with a certain letter (or you can use a range of letters for those less commonly used e.g. x-z). Of course if you like this idea then you have to go back and update the info for each movie you've entered so far.

Sorry guys, but I don't see the point. I'm serious, I don't want to offend you, but I seriously don't see the point of all this.

When I think of a precise movie, I type its title, and in most cases there are only a few results.

If I'm looking at my list of owned videos, and I want to find "Mad Max", then I type "Mad Max", making the string search appear with only 3 results. And when I'm done, I easily go back to my list of owned videos by clicking "Owned Videos".

So what's the problem ? Why complexify the interface when we already have everything ?

If you really own a lot of movies, moving to the letter "M" won't be quite satisfactory. Hardly better than using the scrollbar...

I suppose that the best way to give you satisfaction would be to add letter buttons...



But is it really worth it ?

I don´t want to get between you Hector and KnoWei, but isn´t it
so that, when scrolling trough the "large" database, would be much faster
adding the A B C D etc. isn´t a must anymore ?

My PC is not very fast and scrolling takes ages,.... so choosing the "L"
would be nice. This only because scrolling is a pain in the,...... Sorry

Scrolling should be fast even on a slow PC. But I have indeed observed that the scrolling sometimes becomes very slow, but I still haven't found the explanation.



If the scrolling worked fine, would you still need those letter buttons ? If you know the title of the movie you want to reach, why don't you use the string search ?

Ok, I've added this feature to my todo list. After some thinking, I'm finally convinced that it could be a nice addition.

See above that you added it to youre todo-list but maybe you are able to findout
why scrolling is slow on some PC´s, till then i´ll use the string search
My PC is a single core AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor 2.70 GHz with 2Gb Ram
Operating system Windows 7 service pack 1

Normaly programs are fast enough, graphics are not as fast as i would like. So
the problem could be my older graphiccard ATI Radeon X1650

Yep,. it makes a difference, it´s defenitely faster

Now the waiting is for the thumbnails to appaer, this is a problem discussed
already ! I believe you want to make the pictures part of the program, this
should make scrolling mucho faster i think

Make the pictures part of the program ? Sorry, I don't know what you mean.

When a picture is downloaded from the internet, it is saved on your hard drive, and the next time it'll be displayed much faster. But loading the file from your hard drive isn't instantaneous either, and a small delay can be observed.

Does it have an effect on the scrolling ? Does it slow down the scrolling ? Does it happen whatever the layout and the thumb size ?

Aah oke, i misunderstood

Wen the program loads the pictures/thumbnails from HD ( i thought it loaded from
the internet every time ) then the scrolling slows down at some points. Some thumbs
are directly shown, others take a bit longer,... nothing i can´t live with.
There is no difference when using other layouts !
Maybe the HD is overloaded by writing temp files and unpacking new movies whole day

On second thought, this means when i format my HD (once every 2 months) then ALL
pictures must be reloaded,. Or am i mistaking ?

Torrenting asks a lot to your hard drive, and will slow down the access to the pictures.



Yes, it's true. You probably should make a backup before formatting.

The pictures are stored inside "C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Coollector\Images".

My typical scrolling is kinda slow too and I'm running a pretty fast system.

2.0 Ghz quad core
8 Gb DDR3 (1333)
1.5 Gb DDR5 nvidia cuda graphics

My HDD's are pretty fast also.

I keep my movies on my hdd. Since they're deep on my drives in multiple folders the only way for me to browse my movies is with coollector .

Sometimes I don't really know what I'm looking for. Doing a string search would require not only knowing exactly what I'm searching for but leaving owned vids. What's needed is not necessarily a way to search but to simply navigate the list more efficiently.

Its not only a matter of just raw speed. When using hyper scrolling i scroll 24 lines of max sized thumbnails in a second but that makes no sense as there is no guarentee where in the list I'll wind up.

I really wish there was a way to quickly navigate to set points in the lists eg. A, F, T, 90%, 20%, 9.0, 8.0, 7.0 etc.

Not to be a sourpuss but i think letter buttons would look lame. (And prob. too much like another program I've seen) Plus there's the space they take up.

I personally don't have a better suggestion but i feel one exists. You seem to have a talent for finding simple solutions that work, I hope you can find an even better one.
