That's true, and I'm responsible for this. Those are character pictures, thus I encourage people to contribute pictures where we can actually recognize the character, and even sometimes the movie scene itself. It wouldn't be possible with face close-ups. That's why the character pictures are cropped differently from the person pictures.
It's clearly a feature that I won't remove. Many users just love that feature. I think it's great in cases where the actor is hardly recognizable in his role, or if the actor has changed a lot since the movie was done (young Mickey Rourke, or Sean Connery, or Macauly Culkin). There's also the pleasure of being reminded of a character or a scene. And finally, more than once did a character picture make me add a movie to my wishlist.
If there are many users who feel like you, in the future I might add an option to disable it.
