Hector I just noticed - I never use an apostrophe in naming my Movie files.The program seems to not be able to match files with certain "special characters" missing.

Possibly when searching movies / adding to database, etc... you can make it compatible with missing apostrophes / special characters?

The scanning algorithm considers any special character as a space (apostrophe, underscore, coma, anything which is neither a letter nor a digit).

Let's take the the movie "it's a wonderful life" as an example.

If your file is named "it s a wonderful life.avi", it'll work fine.

But if your file is named "its a wonderful life.avi", it won't work. Because "its" is not the same as "it + s".

Yeah- I posted that to the Movie Requests b/c I was searching for "Oceans Eleven" but it came up no matches (it wouldn't match Ocean's Eleven)... so I posted it here b/c I though Ocean's Eleven wasn't in the database.

I have some experience with REGEXP and algorithms - they are not easy to work with. But they are powerful... and it could be done to match both ways.

It has to be "Ocean s Eleven", because "Oceans" is not the same as "Ocean + s".



I know regular expressions too, but I can't use them in my program, because that would be too slow with such a huge database. Each time the regex would have to search the 95,000 titles (plus the akas and the original titles). And it would be even slower with a fuzzy search.

I'm using indexing. The database has all the titles indexed by word. It takes zero time to find all the titles starting with any given word sequence. But with this system, as I said, "Oceans" (1 word) is not the same as "Ocean + s" (2 words).

I don't understand why you insist on spelling "Oceans Eleven" the movie "Ocean's Eleven". On a grammatical point of view, that doesn't make sense. A guy named "Ocean" recruits a team of eleven guys ('s is possesive).

What about titles like "Stop! Or My Mom will Shoot" Or "A.I. Artificial Intelligence"... its not always obvious or known where special characters might be... just in my own experience... I remove certain special character from the query then do the search. period, apostrophe, hash, comma, brackets.

It's not simple... and it you don't use REGEXP, and its faster to match how you do it now... I wouldn't suggest bogging down the program and slowing down queries.

Just something I noticed- and with some prog know-how... I understand your explanation and why you are doing it this way. It probably only applies to like 1/2 of 1% of Movie Titles anyway.

That's why the algorithm doesn't pay any attention to the special characters. The algorithm only cares about the words.

If you forget a coma or an apostrophe, it won't matter. But don't replace the word "Ocean" by the word "Oceans".
